Aalst Carnival

from 2nd to 4th March

The Aalst Carnival, with its 600-year history, is a flagship event in Flanders.

Each year, the city transforms into a stage for unique traditions: the symbolic proclamation of the Prince of Carnival, who embodies the festive spirit by taking the mayor’s place for a day, marks the official start of the celebrations.

Among the highlights are the throwing of sweets, the broom dance to ward off evil spirits, and, to close the festivities, the spectacular ritual of burning the Carnival effigy.

These original and meaningful traditions make Aalst Carnival an unmissable event, where history, satire, and conviviality come together to create a show as surprising as it is unforgettable.
